This platform was established to provide Australians with a feel of African vibe without the need to travel to Africa. The diversity Australia offers enables the community to enjoy and learn about different cultures. The baskets sold in this stall are hand crafted using sisal which is imported from Kenya and dyed there to provide the unique look of each basket.
These baskets are made in different sizes – from large, which can take a bit of time to make, to the little ones. The time taken to weave each basket can be long, and each is a labour of love. The concept of weaving these baskets was learned in Alice’s childhood. Basket weaving skills are passed on from the elderly to the young girls. The weaving process is a way of engaging and learning different skills and also an opportunity to socialise with other community members. Therefore, time is never considered a factor as this is part of everyday life.
Heritage of Africa Oz also provides small woven baskets made from raffia. This fibre is grown in Madagascar. It is strong and is imported to Australia for the purpose of creative expression – the making of baskets, hats, mats among other things. Pay a visit to this stall for more exciting hand made baskets.
