Let them eat cake! It’s their 11th birthday and the Castlemaine Artists’ Market is challenging the whole community to get behind them and make them a birthday cake this June as part of the “Castlemaine Colossal Community Cake-Off”, with all funds raised going to MAINfm.
Locals are invited to enter their own unique creation, with special points being awarded for taste, creativity, presentation, and structural innovation. There are categories for kids, teens, and adults – the market committee are encouraging a diverse array of participants, from amateurs to professional bakers and cake decorators.
All proceeds of the cake-off will go toward the running costs of the Castlemaine’s local radio station: MAINfm 94.9 – for their continued support of the arts in the region.
“MAINfm is a fantastic supporter of local music, art and community events. Like many community organisations in Castlemaine, a team of dedicated, talented and passionate volunteers are essential to keep the organisation going. We’re really excited about giving the community the opportunity to give back to our local radio station, who recently were awarded the “2016 Outstanding Small Station Award’ by the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia.’
– said Jane Goodrich, chairperson of the artists’ market committee.
The Castlemaine Artists’ Market will be operating the day of the cake competition, with something for all ages including: more than 70 art, craft, and design stalls, face painting, music, and entertainment. The “Itchy Scabs” (a garage punk-band for kids) will be there to celebrate too, kicking off straight after the winners are announced.
Cakes will be on display at the Castlemaine Artists Market at the Western Reserve from 10am. The winning cakes will be announced at midday, and market-goers will be able to get a slice of their faves for a donation.
Local celebrities and experts judging the cakes include: Ashley Mariani (reigning blue-ribbon queen of Castlemaine), Benjamin Armstrong (head chef of Public INN), Helen Addison-Smith (co-owner/operator of Ice Cream Social), and Loudon Cooper (co-owner/operator of The Aldous Bartending Co.)
MAINfm will be there too of course, live broadcasting the event from their Outside Broadcast Caravan.
“MAINfm is pleased to be part of this event and the support is so appreciated. We will do our best to transmit the cake-offany of cakes over the airwaves.”
